GEMS

Girls’ Empowerment in Digital and Media Skills

GEMS is an Erasmus+ project designed to strengthen girls’ and young women’s participation, safety and empowerment in digital environments.

It develops an innovative, gender-sensitive educational framework that integrates digital skills development, gender equality principles, media literacy and the prevention of technology-facilitated violence.

Through training, participatory learning approaches and institutional cooperation, GEMS fosters autonomy, confidence and critical digital engagement. By combining empowerment with prevention, the project contributes to reducing gender inequalities in digital participation and strengthening resilience against online gender-based violence.

Why it matters — GEMS

Despite rapid digitalisation across Europe, girls and young women remain under-represented in digital and technological fields. At the same time, they face disproportionate levels of online harassment, digital abuse and technology-facilitated gender-based violence.

Digital spaces should be environments of opportunity, participation and creativity — not exclusion or risk. Yet gender inequalities persist in access, confidence, representation and safety online.

GEMS addresses these challenges by promoting equal participation in digital and technological fields, safer and more inclusive online environments, prevention of digital gender-based violence, and stronger digital citizenship and resilience.

  1. Strengthen girls’ and young women’s digital competences and confidence.
  2. Develop gender-sensitive educational frameworks and transferable training models.
  3. Prevent digital gender-based violence and promote online safety.
